Hey everyone! I will be starting a new series called serene nuggets. Each day, I will share a new thought, which would encourage us to adopt positive, newer ways of thinking. After all, a healthy mind leads to a healthy body :)
Today, I will talk about the principle of Non-contention
What is non-contention?
Throughout our days, often we find ourselves overwhelmed with the challenges of life. Sometimes, it may be a tight deadline at work, probably you had an argument with someone near and dear. The general tendency of the mind is to get swept up in the rapids of these negative emotions, which leads to increased stress and anxiety.
Non-contention teaches us to not fight, but accept our difficult emotions. This might seem counterintuitive, but think about it this way. Does fighting and struggling with our negative emotions help us in any way? In fact, it only increases our stress and impacts our health.
Note that acceptance does not mean accepting defeat, or feeling hopeless around negative emotions. It simply means acknowledging these feelings, in a non-judgemental way. An example could be saying that ok, today I am feeling anxious. Let's see how I can make this better.
Once we adopt a positive way of thinking, we can calm our minds and approach the problems in our life, with a much more positive frame of mind. This can lead to reducing our stress, improving our health and even new thoughts and ideas to improve our life! :D
